The first country
in this article that we will be visiting is Namibia whose capital and largest city is Windhoek, which has a population
of about 213,000 people. The total population of Namibia is about 1.87 million
people. The climate of Namibia is a desert, hot, dry; rainfall is scarce and erratic.
The average temperature in January is 73.9F and the average temperature in July is 55.8F. Namibia only receives an average of 14.4 of rain a year. There
are many ethnic divisions in Namibia. 50% of the country is Ovambo, 9% of Namibia
is Kavango, 7% is mixed, another 7% is Herero, and yet another 7% is Damara, 6% of Namibia is European, 5% is Nama, 4% is
Caprivian, and 3% are Bushman, and 2% are Baster. Even with such a variety
of ethnic groups, there are only two groupings of religion. 80% of the country
is Christian and the other 20% is native religions.
Next is Botswana whose capital and largest city is Gaborone with a population of about 195,000 people. The total population of Botswana is 1.76 million people. The climate of Botswana is semiarid; warm winters and hot summers.
The average temperature in January is 79F and the average temperature in July is 55F.
Botswana receives an average of 20.7 of rain a year. English is the official
language in Botswana. There are quite a few ethnic groups in Botswana. 79% of Botswana is Tswana, 11% is Kalanga, 6% is European, 3% is Basarwa, and 1% is other (including Kgalagadi). Botswana is split down the middle in the area of religion with 50% of the country
having a faith of Christianity, and the other 50% having Indigenous beliefs.
Next up is South Africa whose capital is Pretoria. The largest
city in South Africa is Cape Town, with a population of about 2.7 million people. The
climate of South Africa is mostly semiarid; subtropical along east coast; sunny days and cool nights. The average temperature in January is 71.6F and the average temperature in July is 52.3F. South Africa receives an average of 27.7 of rain a year. There
are eleven (11) official languages. Here is list of the official languages: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Pedi, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, and
Zulu. 75% of South Africa is Indigenous African, 14% of South Africa is European,
9% is mixed, and 3% is South Asian Indian. 64% of South Africa is Christians,
28% of South Africa is indigenous beliefs and animist, and 4% is Muslim or Hindu.
Next is Lesotho whose capital and largest city is Maseru, with a population of about 169,200 people. The total population of this country is about 2.5 million people. The climate of Lesotho is temperate; cool to cold, dry winters; hot, wet summers. The average temperature in January is 90F, and the average temperature in July is 20F. Lesotho receives an average of 27.4 of rain a year. 100% of
Lesotho is African Sothos. 80% of the country is Christian and the other 20%
beliefs in Indigenous beliefs.
After Lesotho we pass through South Africa so we can get to Swaziland. Swazilands capital
is Mbabane. The largest city in Swaziland is Manzini whose population is about
73,000. The climate of Swaziland varies from a tropical to a temperate. The average temperature in January is 68F and the average temperature in July is 54F. Swaziland receives an average of 54.8 of rain a year!
97% of the country is African and 3% of the country is European. 60% of
the country is European and 40% have Indigenous beliefs.
At about our half way point
in this article we visit Madagascar whose capital and Antananarivo with a population of about 875,200 people. The total population of Madagascar is 14.9 million people. The
climate of Madagascar is tropical along the coast, temperate inland, and arid in south.
The average temperature in January is 69.8F. The average temperature in
July is 58.1F. Madagascar receives an annual amount of about 53.8 of rain. There are MANY ethnic groups in Madagascar.
Here is a list of them all: Merina 26%, Betsimisiraka 15%, Betsileo 12%,
Tsimhety 7%, Sakalava 6%, Antandroy 5%, Antaisaka 5%, Antaimoro, Bara, Antaimoro 5%, Tanala 4%, Antaifasy, Makoa, Bezanozano,
Antakarana 4%, Antaimoro 3%, Sihanaka 2%, Antanosy 2%, Mahafaly 2%, and French, Comoronian, Indian 2%. There are three religions in Madagascar. These religions are: Indigenous beliefs (52%), Christianity (41%), and Muslim (7%).
Mozambiques capital and largest city is Maputo with a population of about 1.1 million people. Mozambiques total population is about 17.7 million (people). The
climate of Mozambique is tropical to subtropical. The average temperature in
January in Mozambique is 78.4F and the average temperature in July is 65.1F. Mozambique
receives an average of 30.2 of rain a year. 100% of Mozambique is Indigenous
African tribes. The ethnic groups of Mozambique are Indigenous beliefs 50%, Christian
30%, and Muslim 20%.
Next we move onto Malawi whose capital is Lilongwe. The largest
city in Malawi is Blantyre, which has a population of about 533,000 people. The
total population of Malawi is about 10.96 million people. The climate of Malawi
has a tropical, rainy season (November to May), and a dry season (May to November).
The average temperature in January in Malawi is 70.9F and the average temperature in July is 59.4F. Malawi has a wide variety of cultures. Here are the percentages
of these countries: Chewa (Nyanja) 32%, other 18%, Lomwe 16%, Yao 10%, Ngoni
8%, Tumbuka 7%, Ngonde 3%, Sena 3%, Tonga 2%, and European and Asian 1%. 55% of Malawi is Protestant, 40% is Roman Catholic
or Muslim, and 5% of the population is Indigenous believers.
Our second to last country is Zambia whose capital and largest city is Lusaka, which has a population of
about 1.2 million people. The total population of Zambia is about 10.8 million
people. The climate of Zambia is tropical; modified by altitude, with a rainy
season (Oct. to April). The average temperature of Zambia in January is 70.7F
and the average temperature in July is 61.3F. Zambia receives an average of about
33 of rain a year. 99% of the country is African, 1% European, and .20% other. 75% of the country is Christian, 24% of the country is a Traditional or Indigenous
beliefs, and 1% is Muslim and other religious affiliations.
Our
last country in this article is Zimbabwe whose capital Harare, which has a population of about 1.8 million people. All of Zimbabwe has a population of about 13.89 million though. The climate of Zimbabwe is a Tropical; moderated by altitude; rainy season (Nov. to Mar.). The average temperature in January is 69.1F and the average temperature in July is about 56.1F. Zimbabwe receives an average of about 33 of rain a year. Zimbabwe
also has a wide variety of ethnicity, as shown here. Shona 71%, Ndebele 16%,
Other African 11%, mixed and Asian 1%, and European 1%. Zimbabwe also has some
unique religions as shown here: Syncretic 50%, Christian 25%, Indigenous beliefs
24%, and Muslim and other 1%.
