The first stop in Central
Asia is Kazakhstan. Kazakhstans capital is Astana. But Kazakhstans largest city is Almaty which has a population of about 1.1 million people. The total population of Kazakhstan is about 14.5 million people.
The climate of Kazakhstan is continental; cold winters and hot summers, and is semi-arid. The average temperatures and rainfall amounts were not available at this time (N/A). Kazak is Kazakhstans official language; Russian is spoken by 2/3s of the people and is used commonly in
business. 53% of Kazakhstan is Kazakh, followed by Russian with 30%, 7% other,
4% Ukrainian, 2% Uzbekistan, another 2% German, and 1% Uighur. 47% of the population
is Muslim, followed by 44% Russian Orthodox, 7% other, and 2% Protestant.
Our second stop in Central Asia is Tajikistan, whose capital and largest
city is Dushanbe. The total population of Tajikistan is about 6.3 million people. The climate of Tajikistan is a mid-latitude continental with hot summers, mild winters;
and is semiarid to polar in the Pamirs Mountains. The averages and rainfall amounts
were also not available here. Tajik is the official language, but like above,
Russian is used for Government and Business meetings. 65% of the population is
Tajik, 25% is Uzbek, 7% other, and 4% Russian. 80% of the population is Sunni
Muslim, 15% other, and 5% of the population is Shia Muslim.
The third Central Asian country we are visiting in this issue is Turkmenistan
which has a population of about 5.6 million people. Turkmenistans largest city
and capital is Ashgabat, which has a population of about 711,400 people. The
climate for Turkmenistan is a Subtropical Desert. Because of the newness of Central
Asian countries averages arent available because they are not very accurate. 77%
of the country is Turkmen, 9% Uzbek, 7% Russian, 5% other, and 2% Kazaks. 89%
of the country is Muslim, 9% is Eastern Orthodox, and 2% is Unknown.
Our second to last country is Kyrgyzstan whose capital and largest city is
Bishkek, which has a population of about 800,000 people. Kyrgyzstans total population
is about 5.1 million people. The climate of Kyrgyzstan is dry continental to
polar in the
High Tien Shan; subtropical in southwest (Fergana Valley); temperate in northern foothill zone. Kirghiz and Russian are their two official languages. 52%
of Kyrgyzstan is Kirghiz, followed by 18% of the population being Russians, 13% being Uzbek, 12% are others, 3% are Ukrainian,
and 2% are German. 75% of the country is Muslim, 20% is Orthodox, and 5% is other.
Our last country in this issue is Uzbekistan whose total population is about
26.1 million people. Uzbekistans largest city and capital is Toshkent, which
has a population of about 2.2 million people. The climate of Uzbekistan is mostly
a mid-latitude desert, with long, hot summers, mild winters, and semi-arid grassland in east.
The averages were again not available. Here are the languages and how
much of the population speaks them: Uzbek (74%), Russian (14.2%), Tajik (4.4%),
and Other (7.1%). 80% of the country is Uzbek, followed by 6% of the population
being Russians, 5% being Tajik, 3% being Kazak, 2% being Kara kalpak, 2% being other, and 2% being other. 88% of the country
is Muslim (mostly Sunnis), 9% is Eastern Orthodox, and 3% being other.
