These fighters came from the Italian Peninsula and areas surrounding it.  They had little to no armor and only used common weapons such as a wooden stick or a club, they couldnt really afford swords and archery.  These people were often considered around the world as what most call an unarmed or weak opponents.  The term Militia is now more commonly used as the term listed just above and not the one in the beginning of this article.  These people often were suppressed with little challenge and could not stave off much of any attack.  The people were often revolters and were not easily calmed without military action.
