Cleveland is a city located in northeastern Ohio in the United States of America. The population of the city in
2000 was 478,403 people!
Cleveland is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie and is Ohio's second largest city. Cleveland was originally
the area of a French and Native American trading post, it was named Cleveland after Moses Cleveland who surveyed the area
in 1796. Cleveland expanded following the opening of the Erie Canal and the arrival of the railroad in 1851. The
American Civil War stimulated Cleveland's economy of iron and steel processing and oil refining. The majority of local
oil refineries were owned by John D. Rockefeller whom founded Standard Oil in Cleveland. Today, heavy industry is still
a major part of Cleveland's economy. More than 400 medical and industrial research centers and numerous educational
institutions are in the area. In 1995, I.M. Pei opened the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
