Nantucket is an island in the Atlantic Ocean. Nantucket is part of Massachusetts and is located off the south area
of Cape Cod. The estimated permanent population of Nantucket (not summer tourists where the population can exlpode to
50,000+ people) in 2000 is 9,520 people.
Nantucket is seperated from another major island, Martha's Vineyard, by the Muskeget Channel. Nantucket Island
is of glacial origin. Nantucket as sand beaches, a good harbor, and a moderate climate. Nantucket was purchased
from the Plymouth colony in 1641, it then became part of New York and was settled in 1659 by the Quakers, then it was ceded
to Massachusetts in 1692. It was once the whaling capital of the world in the 18th century. But today it is a major
tourism destination with the tourism earning most of the economic income for the island.
Nantucket Island also has the Easternmost point of the United States of America!
